We did it! Nine houses built - start to finish - in
six 5 days!
Meet the Builders
UPDATE, as of 4/1/09:
Charlotte County Habitat, along with eight local contractors has built 9 houses
in just 5 days.
The houses are completed, the mortgage documents are all signed, and the
homeowners are in their brand new, safe and affordable homes! As the
Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity Board President, Roger Miller, stated at
the Builders Blitz '09 Opening Ceremonies: "You can see God's hand
all over this!"

“Habitat for Humanity Changes Lives!”
By Friday, March 20th, nine newly built, freshly
painted and carpeted houses stood where there had been just cement slabs five
days previous. The finished homes
signaled the official close of Charlotte County Habitat Builders Blitz 2009.
However, the following Friday, all nine new homeowners
converged on Farr Law Firm in Punta Gorda, to sign closing documents, heralding
a ‘new beginning’ for each. There
was excitement and a bit of nervousness in the air, as the families arrived,
carrying out the ‘blitz’ theme, by holding all of the closings, simultaneously.
It was easy to lose track of how often the words “thank you”
were heard that day, as each and every family expressed how having their new
home – an affordable home, in a safe neighborhood, will change their family’s
lives. Through tears and laughter,
they all recounted how they’ve stayed up late each night, packing stacks of
boxes, in preparation for the big move, and even joked about camping out on the
doorstep of their new houses, just waiting to sign the mortgage documents and
finally ‘get the keys!”
Charlotte County Habitat is a program that changes lives!
Families which find themselves in the ‘very low’ to ‘low income’ category
are invited and welcomed to come and learn about Habitat for Humanity.
If you have the ability to pay a monthly mortgage, currently averaging
$407 per month, which includes taxes and insurance, as well as a willingness to
partner with Habitat, completing 300 sweat equity hours (for a 1-adult
household), and you can demonstrate the need, then you are the perfect candidate
for a new Habitat house.
As well as just completing the Builders Blitz, where nine
families have gone through our program, and have achieved new homeownership, we
currently have 26 additional families working their way through the program.
Charlotte County Habitat is committed to ending substandard housing in
our county, through God’s love and direction.
As long as families are coming through our doors, in need, we won’t stop
building. Our new ‘battle-cry’ at
Habitat has become “One more house!”
